Adorn Me! Encaustic Jewelry Workshops Present a Variety of Techniques
One of my students emailed me because she was taking all three of my Encaustic Jewelry workshops at Adorn Me! this February, in Houston, Texas. She wanted to know if there was a difference between the three workshops, Wearable Encaustic Shrines, Waxing Images and Cryptic Encaustics. There certainly are! Let me tell you:
Wearable Encaustic Shrines will be a lot of fun. It’s great for the student who loves working out collage ideas- color, composition, text, figurative placement. There is Embedding and Encaustic Casting too- which is really easy and fun. This is a very playful workshop!
Waxing Images is one of my favorites- you will get to really play with color, as there are many surfaces on the open wax form. The pendant that we pour is like a little 2-sided painting completely made of wax, so there are lots of surfaces, to change up the color. Then you’ll get to dig in with incising tools, and I’ll teach you how to draw into the wax, to fill the groove with paint, and then to scrape away the surface to reveal a new color. Then…… you get to try out photo transfer as a little bit of text that runs across the wax. Photo transfer is often taught as its own class- it’s so remarkable, but here you get it as a bonus! It will be fascinating and colorful!
Cryptic Encaustics is a simple technique that brings such beautiful results you will be stunned at the designs. We’ll use probably two closed back bezels in this class- you’ll fill them and then press interesting wooden and metal stamp forms into them- that’s why I call it deep stamping. You’re not stamping onto the surface, but into the surface, then the wax displaces itself, so when we scrape away the surface to see what it’s made- it surprises us! The scraping away to reveal is the excavating part. It’s very random and surprising- what the wax does in this class!
