An Even Split

An Even Split

I’ve had some time away from the studio while I was photographing my vignettes outdoors, and when I came back, a piece that I had left sitting on a table in my studio half finished- (for a few months!), suddenly resolved itself. I knew what to do.

This piece was a polymer woman, still uncured, but she had dried out in a type of partial cure from sitting so long- which led to a long crack forming across her waist. I mean, look at her- she had to lay in such a position for months on her back!

And what is this position?

She is actually a praying figure, not some wild sex symbol, although it’s hard to tell at this point! She’s in the buff because her gown will be transparent so you’ll get the nice outline while she remains a prude.)

Anyway, the polymer had just dried out too much and a decision was needed as to how to cook her up. Well, I loved that she split, because my problem was solved. I sliced her up.
I have been making Santos figures, which only use the upper torso, and I’ve been making them rather like Greek statues, without limbs (alas, crumbled into the dust of ruins). Well, this praying woman had lots of limbs and they were in all types of directions. And as maybe you have gathered, I like to cast my pieces, so she was going to be tricky.

Well, when she split, my casting job became a piece of cake. She too, would get cast in parts, just like the other Santos. I would get to utilize her upper torso for a Santos, then attach her for another casting with her original intention as a kneeling, praying woman. Two sculptures for the price of one! An Even Split!
