Channeling the Work that is Yours

I was thinking about musicians, and how they may, for instance, channel a full idea all at once: the melody, lyrics, and rhythm; even the bridge or variation comes at once. How, do you suppose this happens?

What about you and your medium? Are the concepts and ideas, the themes you are working with random or fated? Can you channel something in full and does it feel complete? Let’s look at this.

I have begun to think that there is a pool of our own works, on a higher plane, saved for us, each one of us, to produce. For instance, your work is there, already established in full. And the thing that allows you to create this beautiful work, in full, down here, is your willingness and discipline, to train in your medium and stick to it. Take classes to learn new things and connect with others, yes…

but mainly, show up in your studio every day, and work it out.

I would say this is the most important thing that will gather your predestined work to you –  to not give up. Keep working through problems and obstacles. Develop the idea you are working on right now. When you work through this one idea, there is a new idea just beyond that to work through, and you only get to it through the piece you are working on now.

And your work will mature. And you will mature as an artist. And you won’t wish you were doing someone else’s work. We each have our own work to which we are called. And, even more- no matter which road you take through different mediums, if you stick to the work at hand, you will end up exactly where you are supposed to be: in the right medium, expressing your concepts in just the right way, with exactly the right tools to get you there. It’s your artistic destiny. So enjoy the journey – it’s yours, all yours.
